WELCOME TO TRAVEL ROMA
Your Portal to Roman Tourism
When deciding where to go and what to see during your next vacation to Europe, you need to consider Rome. Founded in the 9th century BC, Rome is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe and it was the seat of cultural and political influence for much of European history. At its pinnacle, the Roman Empire controlled most of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The vast extent of it influence brought many cultures, ideological and theological concepts and art forms together in the Roman Capital. Now, modern day Rome is most famous for its great works of art and architecture in and around the city.
Many works of art can be found on your visit to Rome. It has 50 museums of notable interest. The National Roman Museum is spread over several locations, throughout the city, including the Palazzo Massimo, the Crypta Balbi, the Palazzo Altemps and the Baths of Diocletian. The biggest draw for these locations are their collections of statues, earthenware, sarcophagi, frescoes, mosaics, jewelry and coin preserves and relics from ancient Rome. The National Gallery of Modern Art is a popular destination because of its collection on works by famous artists like Gova, Renoir, Van Gogh and Kandinsky. If Renaissance artists are who you seek, then check out the Galleria Borghese and see artwork by Raphael, Caravaggio, Correggio and many other Masters. Don't forget that Michelangelo spent 4 years creating the world-famous fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Rome is a hot spot for architecture of historical significance. Possibly, the most iconic building in Rome is the Roman Coliseum. A 3-hour tour will walk you through its history, from the obstacles of ancient engineering to chariot races and gladiator battles. St. Peter's, in the Vatican City, will amaze you with its immense proportions and detailed architecture. We can thank Bernini for designing must of the interior and exterior of the Basilica and Michelangelo for his gravity-defying dome that sits atop the enormous structure. The pantheon is known as the oldest Roman Catholic Church in Rome and said to be the site from which Romulus (one of the storied founders of Rome) was carrying off by an eagle, after he died.
With over 50 museums and over 40 major architectural treasures, Rome is a top tourism vacation destination! We are not the only ones to think so. Just ask Rick Steves.
